A little on the fringe of what I do but as part of the philosophy of good health, is a foundation stone of Chiropractic.
Wellbeing is a catch all term which encompasses, attitude, thought processes, mindfulness, exercise, habits, diet and nutrition and how we go about our lives. Chiropractic treatment is a fantastic hands on treatment for biomechanical problems but when embraced as part of a bigger thought process of wellbeing can become so much more. I see patients with many different symptoms that they wish to be rid of. Some expect a magical cure over just a couple of sessions and others understand that rarely things are that simple. Those who stop sessions often end up at some point down the road returning in pain. Others adopt a maintenance program to avoid periods of that initial pain returning. It is after all personal choice but often those that stop and later return then do adopt a prevention philosophy. Some know in their heart that the problems they have are fuelled by their lifestyle but are in denial. Simple little changes to some seem, like mountains to others
We contribute to our own downfalls but unless we are mindful of our actions at all times, which, let’s be honest, few of us are able to do 24/7/365, we need a little nudge now and again. These lapses in concentration on ‘us’ can lead to nutritional problems, be it a craving for sugar or not having time to cook from scratch or eating too much of one food group or busy periods interrupting our fitness regime. We assume that our parents give us a good foundation and our habits as adults are often formed on what we are taught as children and unless we do our own research wouldn’t question our upbringing.
Stress of jobs and family commitments or loneliness can all bring their own problems. It doesn’t have to be this way. We all just need to take some time out to reassess what we need and sometimes don’t need in our lives at that period of our lives.
High stress and poor nutrition can have a long term physical effect on our bodies. Diabetes has a long list of symptoms including nerve pain (neuropathy), changed sensations, not just those shifts in sugar levels that give those who suffer dips in energy and mood swings. Stress can trigger many physical manifestations, tense muscles which in turn lead to aches and pains in the joints, headaches etc. Dashing around at break neck speeds in life and not giving yourself time to re camp means that you run the risk of putting your adrenal glands under stress. This is part of the fight or flight process. We are not designed to be permanently in this state and unless we do something about stress, it can compromise us so that our bodies become vulnerable to other autoimmune responses. Asthma, eczema, allergy, Thyroid problems, diabetes, heart conditions, blood pressure problems…the list is endless.
Taking steps to live in a conscious state, mindful of what we consume, wear, put on our skin, do and don’t do can all prevent too many visits to the GP or your Chiropractor. However we all find that sometimes we are not in a position to change things for a while and in this case external support is necessary.
