This tape is similar to that seen worn by the athletes at the Olympics, Tennis players and other top level sports personnel. Usually bright in colour but also flesh toned. The tape has a, special glue on the back in a special pattern formation which allows the tape to stretch at different tension across the entire length of the tape.
These patterns allow the underlying tissues to be lifted, supported or eased according to how it is applied. Kinesio Tape can be used for lymphatic drainage when dealing with a swollen joint or bruise and its effect is quite amazing. This is done with very little tension put into the tape and works by affecting just the lymphatic drainage between the layers of soft tissue and skin and encouraging circulation. It can be used to put tension into a weak muscle or muscle group again according to the tension which in this case is a little more but encourages the muscle to contract. The reverse is also true the tape can be placed to relax a tense or contracted muscle allowing it to relax. In this case it would be placed in the opposite direction. By placing the tape correctly over the muscle groups this can encourage and support good posture where the cause of bad posture is due to joint / muscle weakness or imbalance.
Efforts have been taken to make the tape suitable for everyone but a few people can have a sore / itchy reaction to it. If you are not sure always insist on test being done.
This technique was developed by an Osteopath called Neil Asher. He has developed a regime which is quite time consuming, and some find quite painful. It is mostly working on soft tissues with medium to firm pressure and involves the whole of the arm from the wrist and also the superior chest, shoulder girdle and superior back and under arms. He found that a combination of particular motions and a variation of different pressures applied in a particular formation was very effective at preventing the ‘freezing’ from becoming as deep, allowing you the patient to maintain greater range of motion and in most cases reduce the pain sometimes associated with this condition. The protocol also includes an exercise regime to be followed at home.
